SEAL OF OM NOM NOMPROVAL

Veggie Scotch eggs taste-tasted and found, quite frankly, to be identical to the meat-based kind. V. v. pleased. Actually, they also taste just a tiny bit like savoury ducks, which made me nostalgic enough for my childhood that I had to go and look them up to see if they were vegetarian-safe (they always tasted mostly like roasted Christmas stuffing to me). They're, uh... not. In any way. Admittedly I didn't know what I was eating when I was a kid....

I was going to say if they make a veggie version of that particular Lancashire dish I'll be impressed, but given that most of the flavour is herbs and it's amazing how well people can simulate meat these days (I feel like I'm posting from a Sci-Fi Future just saying that), it's probably pretty doable. I for one would nom.

Some people can taste the difference between fake meat and real meat. Justin can, for example (and he doesn't like fake meat-- he'll just get tofu or a veggie dish when we go to vegetarian restaurants). I can't tell the difference when the imitation is good and has the right texture and all, but it might just be that it was a long time between when I stopped eating real meat and when I tried fake meat, so I'd forgotten what animals actually tasted like.

I'm glad I can't tell. I don't want to miss eating animals, because when I think about doing it it makes me want to cry and hug the poor animal and fluff it and cradle it gently and tell it I'll never hurt it. Even if it's a big hog or something. And I'd feel so awful and weird if I simultaneously did crave eating it-- like I was someone dangerous who shouldn't be allowed near it.

(disclaimer: I don't mind what other people eat; it's all up to what does or doesn't bother them; as you probably can tell, it's a personal gut squick for me and that's why I don't; etc.)

I can taste the difference, but I usually don't mind. Hey, I even like the taste of quorn. Now, if they can emulate peppered salami and bacon perfectly, I am committed.
